Mrs Bucket Reveals her Life on Stage

South Shields Customs House
Saturday 9th April 2016.

Patricia Routledge is best-known for her role as Hyacinth Bucket in BBC TV series Keeping Up Appearances, but the fact she’s a trained singer remains one of the best kept secrets in show business.

Her prolific career in theatre, particularly musical theatre, is the subject of her new show which arrives at The Customs House this weekend.

In a fascinating encounter with the writer and broadcaster Edward Sekerson, the evening is illustrated with rare recordings into her life and career.

She said: “Edward decided quite a few years ago that one of the best kept secrets was my musical theatre side and he decided to dig it out. I knew him from radio and I had such regard for him that I said I would do the talks.”

She won the 1968 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role in Darling of the Day, and the 1988 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Candide.

Despite being 87, Patricia still enjoys embarking on any exciting job opportunities that come her way and loves being on the road with Edward.

Patricia, who is also known as Hetty Wainthrop, added: “I enjoy it and I never thought I would. I don’t particularly enjoy talking about myself and then there I am at it for a couple of hours on stage. There is a shape to the show but we sometimes surprise each other. We always try to make it seem like it’s the first time we’ve done it.”
