Preview: Hamlet on tour

SHAKESPEARE SEASON CONTINUES WITH A CONTEMPORARY SETTING OF HAMLET

CRANKED ANVIL THEATRE COMPANY presents
Hamlet

Newcastle Alphabetti Theatre – Tuesday 7th – Saturday 11th June 2016

Stanley Alun Armstrong Theatre Thursday 16th June 2016

After the success of their ‘Mackems v Geordies’ Romeo & Julietlast month (which we described as a “must see” production: Review LINK) Cranked Anvil continue their season of contemporary Shakespeare with one of The Bard’s most challenging plays, Hamlet.

This time the setting is a trendy cafĂ©-bar, Elsinore’s, on Newcastle’s bustling Quayside; a thin cover for a seedy world of organised crime and small-time Geordie mafia.  Conspiracy, double-dealing, and treachery are rife. Where life is cheap and the currency is murder, will Hamlet revenge his father’s untimely death?

The play is being brought to life by a highly talented and accomplished creative team – some of them returning again after working on Romeo and Juliet.  One of those is Wayne Miller, who turned in a mesmerising performance as Tybalt, as well as putting together the unanimously praised fight scenes.  He said: “I’m over the moon to be back with Cranked Anvil in their next Shakespeare production.  I’m looking forward to getting my teeth into playing Rosencrantz, as well as working on the big fight scene at the end.  This one will be even more challenging, as it will involve weapons and, probably, even more blood than before!”

David Jackson & Natasha Haws
The production will also feature live music, composed especially for the piece by David Jackson (who appeared as Romeo last month) and performed by him and local singer-songwriter Natasha Haws, as Ophelia.  It adds an extra dimension to the performance, using lyrics from Shakespeare’s play and sonnets to create the setting as well as highlight the drama and tragedy of the story.

The role of Hamlet is being played by company director Paul Dunn.  He said: “It’s the part every actor wants to play, and I’ve had the idea for this production for quite a few years.  I’m delighted that we’re finally staging it, with such a talented cast.”  His usual director duties are therefore being shared with Sarah Seymour, a regular on the scene who has recently come from a stint shadow-directing at Northern Stage.

Reviews of Romeo & Juliet said, “Great acting, lively action scenes, and a charismatic cast.”  The company are certainly continuing that into this production of Hamlet – it’s one not to be missed.
