Preview: Arts Centre Washington’s Autumn season




Arts Centre Washington’s Autumn season has a superb selection of shows for all!

Including dancing dogs, fire breathing dancers, tiny worlds and ghastly ghost stories! There is theatre, music, comedy and art for everyone!

Highlights of the theatre programme include: 

Cornered / Wise Men Say (Cranked Anvil) 
Thursday 14 September.  Two, one act, Sunderland AFC themed plays. Cornered is penned by Look North’s Jeff Brown and tells the true story of Dave Corner and his cup final nightmare. From the company who brought the sell out success ‘I Left My Heart in Roker Park’.

Life by the Throat (Most Wanted) Thursday 12 October. The story of one man’s life from birth to death - written and performed by a woman. From former Coronation Street actor turned award-winning writer/ performer Eve Steele.

She Wins All The Races (Mad
Alice) Thursday 19 October. A powerful, heartening, inspirational show about a little girl growing up with the certainty of loss. The play is performed by Shelley O’Brien and is based on the actress’s real life story of growing up with her two brothers who were born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Jane Eyre: An Autobiography (Dyad Productions) Thursday 9 November. This critically acclaimed show is told through Jane’s eyes.  English literature’s most celebrated autobiographical novel shocked the Victorians, and Charlotte Bronte’s gothic subversion of fairy-tale romance is now distilled for the stage.


Welcome to Paradise (A Ship of Fools) Thursday 30 November. Strap in for the Captain and Raoul’s playfully anarchic rollercoaster to the darkest corners of the grotto where the mold festers under the tree. Think the Mighty Boosh teaming up with The League of Gentlemen to present a performance lecture about the evils of capitalism!


As ever the centre has a fantastic programme of theatre for children and families, such as:

Small Worlds (Mimika Theatre) Saturday16 September. Enter inside an amazing performance tent to watch an extraordinary fusion of digital animation and traditional puppetry for children aged 5 - 11.

Dogs Don’t Do Ballet (Little Blue Monster) Saturday 28 October. A brand new stage adaptation of the popular children’s book about a dogs secret dancing desires by Anna Kemp, for children age 3+.

The Dream Factory (House of Stray Cats) Saturday 4 November. With breath-taking puppetry, enchanting storytelling and an exquisite musical score, we invite you to join us and immerse yourselves in our dream world. In a land where anything is possible, no imagination is too big for our dream factory. Not even yours. For children aged 4+


For a night with a difference try Glow (Saturday 18 November) and enter a stunning world of light, performance and projection.  Glow is an immersive performance of breath-taking Hip hop  dance and circus skills.  The performance will climax with a jaw dropping fire dance in the Courtyard. 


Stand Up Comedy is also in plentiful supply with Newcastle Improv legends The Suggestibles, cult Tyneside comedian Gavin Webster and Britain’s Got Talent Impressionist Cal Halbert.  

Looking forward to Christmas at Arts Centre Washington and it is packed full of theatre, music and dancing!  This year’s Christmas show will be ‘Lilly and the Little Snow Bear’ a funny festive adventure suitable for children aged 3 +.  Add to that a Suggetible’s Improv panto, Christmas Cabaret, a night of Christmas ghost stories inThe Book of Darkness and Light, sing-a-long Muppets Christmas Carol and a Monster New Year’s Eve Bash, this could be the best Christmas ever!
