Whitney Houston fans can get a taste of what to expect from a leading tribute act when she appears on television this weekend.
Belinda Davids performs as the iconic singer in The Greatest Love of All: The Whitney Houston Show, which comes to The Customs House, in South Shields, on Wednesday, September 27.
But first, she will be taking to the stage in BBC One’s new entertainment show, Even Better Than The Real Thing, at 7pm on Saturday, September 16.
The 60-minute special, fronted by Paddy McGuinness, celebrates the biggest names in pop music by bringing together the world’s top tribute artists for a glamorous night of performing and competing.
South African songstress Davids beat more than 15,000 hopefuls to take the lead role in The Greatest Love of All: The Whitney Houston Show in 2013.
It was her own love of Houstonthat prepared her for the part, having been exposed to mainly R&B and gospel music as a child.
Singing professionally from her early teens, Houston songs became a fixture in Davids’ live shows. She said: “I think I’ve sung at least one Houston track in almost every live show I’ve ever performed.”
The Greatest Love of All: The Whitney Houston Show has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2013, boasting sell-out shows in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Europe, as well as the UK.
The two-hour spectacular is an uplifting tribute to the music and memory of Houston, featuring 20 tracks spanning her full career, including I Will Always Love You, Greatest Love of All, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, I Have Nothing and I’m Every Woman.
A seven-piece band, choreographed dancers, replica costuming and state-of-the-art lighting and effects combine to create a spectacular concert experience.
Davids said: “I want people to come and remember Whitney when she was at the top of her game and when she was fabulous.”
Other acts appearing on Even Better Than The Real Thing include tributes to George Michael, Little Mix, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Adele, Katy Perry, Michael Jackson, Ed Sheeran and Amy Winehouse.
At the end of the show, the live studio audience will vote for their favourite performer.
The one off special will also create unique and surprising duets, as the tribute artists deliver never-before-seen collaborations.
Paddy McGuinness says: “This show is a belter! A talent show that’s only about the talent - with the best tribute acts from around the world singing their hearts out."
