The 39 Steps
Newcastle People’s Theatre
Tuesday 22 to Saturday 26 May 2018

Place your tongue firmly in your cheek for The 39 Steps, a hilarious spoof of classic British spunk and derring-do.

Tweed-clad action hero and all-round spiffing chap Richard Hannay (Jake Wilson Craw, pictured above) gets caught up in a conspiracy of international espionage. But foreign spies and a beautiful, mysterious blonde are no match for our unflappable adventurer.

Fun, fast-moving and ludicrously comic, Hannay’s epic journey across Britain - involving steam trains, the Forth Bridge, car chases and dodging spotter planes whilst fleeing across a Highland glen – are created using not much more than a trunkful of props and costumes.

Both Buchan’s 1915 novel and Hitchcock’s legendary movie of 1935 are hilariously parodied in this Olivier award-winning stage adaptation by Patrick Barlow that took the West End and Broadway by storm.

And they’re adding a twist of their own, performing the whole thing like a classic black and white film with a monochrome set, costumes and props and even a pianist on stage to provide live musical accompaniment!

Director Tony Childs comments “Once we decided to go for this idea, we realised how well it would work with the play, which is wonderfully funny. Our audiences are going to love this.”

Tickets:     £14 (Concessions £11.50) from the box office: 0191 265 5020 or online at www.peoplestheatre.co.uk
