One man walks into a public bathroom. Another man follows. Cottage deals with one of the most shameful yet thrilling parts of queer history, setting the danger of public sex against the thrill of private connection.
Tense, darkly comic, and intensely intimate, this play grips audiences from the first line. The dialogue ranges from the hilarious to the thrilling to the tragic, rejecting modern trends to examine queer stories from an unflinching and unsanitised realism. With a style compared to Beckett and Pinter, Cottage is an uncompromising look at queer sex and the shames - and joys - that can come with it.
Sightline Productions (formerly affiliated with Squashed Mango Theatre Company) is a Durham University-based theatre company dedicated to providing a platform for underrepresented voices, with a particular focus on original and exciting pieces of student writing. Cottage made its debut at the Durham Drama Festival, and won a series of awards, including Best Show, Best Writing, and Best Actor for Ben Lewis (Adrian Mole, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda) as One.
