Newcastle Theatre Royal Announces Outstanding New Season

 

The brightest West End musicals, moving dramas, suspense-filled whodunits and stunning opera are all part of the jam-packed new season announced by Newcastle Theatre Royal.

One of the biggest stage sensations of all time, Dirty Dancing returns (Tuesday 1 – Saturday 5 August 2023). The iconic story features the hit songs Hungry Eyes, Hey! Baby, Do You Love Me? and the heart stopping (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life and an incredible cast of dancers.

Musical fans will be spoilt for choice; dive into an hilarious deep-sea pearl of show that’s set to make a splash – The SpongeBob Musical makes its Newcastle Theatre Royal debut (Tuesday 5 – Saturday 9 September 2023) with Divina de Campo as Plankton. Hot on its heels is the iconic global phenomenon Jesus Christ Superstar (Tuesday 26 – Saturday 30 September 2023) which features music and lyrics by multi award-winners Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

The hit musicals don’t stop there! The original showbiz musical 42nd Street (Tuesday 10 – Saturday 14 October 2023) combines breath-taking tap dance routines, backstage intrigue, classic romance and delightful comedy to dazzling effect. And the fun continues into 2024, when, direct from the London Palladium, the sensational new production of one of the most beloved musicals – The Wizard of Oz – comes to Newcastle (Tuesday 16 – Sunday 21 April 2024).

Having taken the West End by storm, Autumn sees the supernatural thriller 2:22 A Ghost Story (Tuesday 19 – Saturday 23 September 2023) take to the stage as it embarks on its first ever UK tour. Mystery and suspense continue when Agatha Christie’s best-selling crime novel, And Then There Were None (Tuesday 17 – Saturday 21 October 2023) returns for a week-long run.

Rory Bremner will asking the questions when the entertaining and provocative drama Quiz (Tuesday 3 – Saturday 7 October 2023) takes a thrilling insight into the Coughing Major scandal that engulfed one of the world’s most popular TV quiz shows, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Life of Pi, winner of every major play award including the Olivier for Best Play, brings jaw-dropping visuals, magic and world-class puppetry when it comes to Newcastle for an epic two week run (Tuesday 23 January – Saturday 3 February 2024).

One of the greatest British comedies ever written – Noises Off - visits Newcastle Theatre Royal for one week (Tuesday 12 – Saturday 16 September 2023). Michael Frayn’s celebrated play serves up a riotous double bill, a play within in play, which hurtles along at breakneck speed.

Audience favourites Northern Ballet and Scottish Ballet both return with new twists on classic tales.

Northern Ballet bring their signature sparkle to the timeless love story, Beauty & the Beast (Tuesday 7 – Saturday 11 November 2023), whilst Scottish Ballet offer up a charming twist to the tale with their presentation of Cinders! (Wednesday 7 – Saturday 10 February 2024) featuring glittering new designs and a stunning art-nouveau inspired set.

Completing the trio of new dance productions, the renowned Ailey 2 brings an exciting repertory featuring Francesca Harper’s futuristic Freedom Series (excerpt), Robert Battle’s thrilling The Hunt, the incredible energy of William Forsythe’s Enemy in the Figure (excerpt) and Alvin Ailey’s beloved masterpiece Revelations to Newcastle Theatre Royal (Tuesday 24 – Wednesday 25 October 2023). 

Opera North will make a welcome return with a stunning programme featuring Falstaff, La rondine and Masque of Might (Tuesday 31 October – Saturday 4 November 2023) and an Aleko / Cavlalleria rusticana double bill and Cosi Fan Tutte (Wednesday 13 – Saturday 16 March 2024).
