Subterranea
Whitley Bay Laurel's Theatre
Tuesday 10 - Saturday 28 September 2024
It’s the year 2029, 5 years after a nuclear attack sent the people of the North East underground. Well, not everyone; only those who couldn’t afford shelters above ground. It was only supposed to be for a month; then they could resurface, but they’re still there, in the tunnels, under the city.
The Below isn’t a bad place; it’s thriving with man-made ecosystems, makers, builders, families, and community. But it was never their choice; they made the best out of what they had available to them when The Above locked them down.
So The Above stay above, and The Below stay below. But what happens when after all of the empty promises and false hope, a law comes into place that changes everything?
They’ve been walking all over us, but not any more.
Peachplant Productions
Peachplant are a local North-East company co-founded by Lucy Curry and Carl Wylie in 2021. In 2022, they debuted Whale of a Time at Alphabetti Theatre which received majority 5* reviews. The show became one of Alphabetti’s best selling shows of all time and the company went on to be finalists for North East Culture Awards as Newcomer of the Year 2022.
In February 2024, Peachplant sold out Live Theatre with Greenhouse. A melting pot of North East artists with short plays, music and stand up, which was a flying success.
In July 2024, they took a group of 13 North East theatre women on a wellness retreat weekend. This was fully funded by Peachplant, NE Cultural Freelancers and Jamie Eastlake. And was with the aim of recognising the need for rest and the pressure of productivity. The Retreat formed a real shift in the way Peachplant want to move forward when working with artists in such a high pressure, adrenaline filled industry, so we can love our work whilst maintaining our health and happiness.
