REVIEW: Jesus Christ Superstar at Newcastle Tyne Theatre

Jesus Christ Superstar

Newcastle Tyne Theatre & Opera House

Until Saturday 1 March 2025

Tyne Theatre Productions started ten years ago as an organisation raising money, through putting on a production, to help save the historic theatre on Newcastle's Westgate Road. This year they are back with an ambitious modern interpretation of the biblical musical.

Jesus Christ Superstar, created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, debuted in 1970 as a rock opera concept album before being staged on Broadway in 1971. The musical explores the last days of Jesus Christ through a modern lens, emphasizing themes of betrayal, faith, and political intrigue.

This is something very different to their first production (Pirates of Penzance back in 2015). The programme notes that the profits from ticket sales will go directly to the preservation of the iconic Grade-I listed building and that is in itself a great reason to support the show. The venue has come a long way in the past 10 years with the refurbished seating in the stalls and new cafe-bar. It is a long way from the uncertain times when the charity first took over the running of the place.

This production is staged differently to the recent touring production of JCS. This has more of a feel of a rock opera. Indeed sticking the band on stage adds to that feel. The cast are in modern clothing but, in my opinion, that does not detract from the power of the piece. The story still is the most prominent aspect of the show. I'll assume that everyone knows the story and there's no spoilers when I say that the crucifixion at the end, and the cruelty leading up to it, probably doesn't make it a show for very young children.

The show has a number of stand-out leads. Each one was given at least one song to really shine. Tyler Neumann, as Judas, sets the bar high with the opening Heaven On Their Minds. Thom Potts was the understudy covering Pilate, but you'd never guess as his voice really suited Pilate's Dream. The camp humour that Ben Stoddart gave Herod during Herod's Song really lightened the mood, and provided a chance for the audience to laugh.

Bridget Anne Wallace added a rare female lead as she sang I Don't Know How To Love Him - there was plenty of passion in the intense rendition. I just wish her sound was slightly louder (or as least as loud as the male actors) during Everything's Alright. Indeed the balance in the sound was probably my only niggle in the show, coupled with the occasional bang or feedback, the sound could be a touch distracting.

Craig Wallace excels in the a challenging role as Jesus. Not only does the role demand that he is literally pushed from pillar to post but he also has some big numbers to sing. His vocal range comfortably handled the songs - at times the notes came out apparently effortlessly and yet the score is really demanding. No wonder the audience was on their feet at the end.

As is often the case with amateur musical productions, there is a large ensemble who fight, dance and add to the chorus - however the stage doesn't get over full (unlike some shows we've witnessed). They played an essential part in the storytelling as well as the overall sound of the show.

This is a tight rock opera, under director Sonia Hernandez, in which the story sung-through. The band, led by musical director Jenni Watson, is performing for the full show and is much a part of it as the actors.

I enjoyed the energy of the show. The fabulous leads helped elevate the show with their singing ability.

Maybe the choice of next year's show will give more of the female participants more chance to shine - Carrie The Musical, perhaps?

Bridgerton star’s voice cameo as award-winning film short film adapted into play

A multi award-winning short film has been adapted into a powerful play which is set for its world premiere this spring – and features a guest cameo from a ‘Bridgerton’ star.

‘The Moth’ was originally filmed as a ten-minute piece to camera, part of a series of short films from Elysium Theatre Company called ‘The Covid-19 Monologues’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--zeNIX27vo each one written, rehearsed and filmed under lockdown conditions during the pandemic of 2020-22.

Labelled as ‘powerful from its first moments to its last’ by The Bubble, it scooped several gongs, including an Olwen Wymark Award from the Writers Guild of Great Britain and Best Monologue at the Kwanzaa Film Festival in Harlem, NYC,  just one of 26 festivals it was chosen by around the world.

Thanks to its worldwide success, Elysium Theatre Company has adapted ‘The Moth’ for the stage, bringing this gripping thriller to 25 venues across the North and the Midlands on the company’s biggest tour yet.

And in a coup for Elysium, the voice of actress Adjoah Andoah – who plays Lady Danbury in hit Netflix series ‘Bridgerton’ – will feature as unseen character Joy.

Elysium Artistic Director Jake Murray said: “When we launched the Covid-19 Monologues we had no idea they would be so successful. All we were looking for was a way of staying creative during lockdown, we never dreamed they would be seen all over the world.

“The runaway success of ‘The Moth’ made it an obvious choice to adapt for the stage. Five years of hard work later and here it is, about to hit theatres for the first time. It is a stunning play, written like a thriller, that gets to the heart of the world we live in today with all its tensions and divisions, but holds out hope for the future. There is interest in it from theatres all over the world, so it’s a special honour to bring it to audiences across the Midlands and North before anyone else. We have a fantastic cast and are very lucky to have the guest voice cameo played by ‘Bridgerton’ star Adjoa Andoh.”

The 25-venue tour of ‘The Moth’ comes hot on the heels of Elysium’s sell-out 19 venue Northern tour of ‘Othello’, which critics branded “an exhilarating theatrical experience“ (the Crack).

Based on a true story, ‘The Moth’ focuses on the tense relationship between black British activist John, played by  Faz Singhateh, and Micky Cochrane’s Marius, a white South African ex-soldier, after a chance encounter on a train in the 1990s changes their lives forever.

A thrilling piece of theatre that deals with race, war, the legacy of history, the quest for redemption and the limits of forgiveness, it is a show that will have audiences on the edge of their seats.

The tour sees Elysium, which has bases in Durham and Manchester, play to theatres in their two native regions, while also returning to Yorkshire, Teesside, Northumberland, and breaking new ground in previously-unvisited Birmingham and Liverpool.

North East dates on the tour:

27 February-1 March – Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, Hexham

4 March – Gala Theatre, Durham

5 March – Ushaw House, Durham

6 - 8 March – Laurels, Whitley Bay

13 March – Blackhall Community Centre

14 -15 March – Live Theatre, Newcastle

19 March – Hullabaloo Space, the Hippodrome, Darlington

21 March – St Thomas Church Hall, Stanhope

26 March – The Witham, Barnard Castle

27 March – East Stanley Working Man’s Club, Stanley

28 -29 March – Alnwick Playhouse

2 April – Hull Truck, Hull

3 April – Stokesley Community Library

4 April – Bishop Auckland Town Hall

8 April – The Athenaeum, Sunderland

9 April – the Friarage Theatre, Yarm

Jake added: “When we launched Elysium in 2017 we just played to two venues: the Assembly Rooms in Durham and 53two in Manchester. Now we are touring to 25 theatres all across the breadth of the country.

“The support we have had is amazing. Each tour sees us expand into new venues. ‘The Moth’ sees us perform at Live Theatre, Newcastle, for the first time, which is incredibly exciting, as well as Shakespeare North in Liverpool, the Laurels in Whitley Bay and Harrogate Theatres.

“It is a thrill to return to the Lowry in Manchester and to stay true to our roots by performing in East Stanley Working Men’s Club and Blackhall Community Centre. This is real cultural levelling up, as we reach audiences everywhere.”

This is Elysium’s second venture into new writing and the second Covid-19 Monologue to be adapted for the stage, the first being Steve Byron’s ‘Reiver -Tales From The Borders’, which sold out for two Northern tours.

Modern and period classics by playwrights like William Shakespeare, Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg make up the majority of Elysium’s previous 14 productions.

The script of ‘The Moth’, written by South African-born British playwright and actor Paul Herzberg, will also be published by Bloomsbury and sold on the tour and in bookshops all over the world, helping Elysium to give Northern theatre a little more of a global profile.

Paul, an award-winning actor and writer born in South Africa, said: “Jake wanted to keep the spirit of theatre alive with the original monologues, and came to me asking if I had any ideas.

“I had a half-page piece I’d kept to the side for years and we developed that into the filmed version of ‘The Moth’. I wanted to explore the idea of forgiveness, and if there is a limit to what can be forgiven, and having these two characters together, in a kind of confessional situation, seemed to be a good way to do that.

“I was totally taken by surprise with all of the success it had, but it made me think that maybe it deserved to be made into a full-length play, and here we are!”

As part of its tour, Elysium will also working with Durham University, the Anti-Apartheid Legacy Centre and Show Racism the Red Card, as well as Trafford Veterans and East Durham Veterans, who will attend post show talks and discussions.

My New Show Is Strictly About The Music

Craig Revel Horwood - Revelations

Whitley Bay Playhouse

Wednesday 18 June 2025

He’s known and loved by millions for getting to the point. And midway through our conversation, Strictly Come Dancing judge, Craig Revel Horwood, does just that.  He’s talking about his new tour – Revelations – which will start on April 4 and visit more than 50 theatres, ending on June 28, when he says this: “This show is unlike anything I’ve ever done. People aren’t going to see ‘The Judge, Craig’. They’re going to see the real Craig. It’s about my life, it’s who I am. It’s the most personal tour I’ve ever done.”

Who Craig is can be traced back to his roots. The man who turned 60 in January and who has become a national treasure started out in musical theatre. His first ever job was West Side Story, and he took singing lessons as a kid, in his native Australia.

Music was in his life throughout his schooling. “It just seemed to be a very natural journey for me to go into musicals. I just loved performing in musicals until I was 30. People don't really know me as a singer because I've been in the background doing it, I suppose.”

Other areas of his life took over. He became one of the UK’s best and most influential directors and choreographers, winning Laurence Olivier Award nominations for Spend Spend Spend and My One and Only. He directed the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and was invited to join the judging panel for BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2004. As of 2025, he’s Strictly’s only original judge.

Strictly made him a household name as a stringent rule-follower who has dished out more low scores of ‘1’ than any other judge. Becoming famous for catchphrases and unique locutions – from chah-chah-chah to fab-u-lous – Craig has outlasted everyone.

And yet there are many more strings to his diamante-encrusted bow, and singing is foremost among them. So when the opportunity arose last year to record an album of songs with the UK’s leading musical theatre record label, Westway, he jumped at the chance.

“I thought: ‘Come on, you're 60. Do it.’ My mum's always told me to get an album together, and do something. So I thought: ‘Yeah, I’ll do it.’ I grew up in the era before things were recorded – so there are no recordings of my earlier performances in theatre. No one had mobile phones and all of that malarkey back then. Now everything is recorded, no matter what you do, I walk out the hotel room, and it's recorded by someone.”

Craig went into the studio and recorded Revelations – Songs Boys Don’t Sing. It was a stunning collection of tunes that showcased a marvellous, emotive, pitch-perfect voice. His interpretations of such songs as Memory showed a discombobulating degree of warmth and empathy, Don’t Rain On My Parade cast him as the ultimate razzle-dazzle showman, while As Long As He Needs Me, from Oliver!, became a song that took on new meaning with Craig’s thoughtful tenderness.

Just like the Great British public, who gave the singer his first chart hit, Craig was thrilled. “Singing is such a liberating experience. Each song on the album means something to me. You know, the first ever musical that my mum went to see with the kids was Jesus Christ Superstar, so I’ve recorded I Don’t Know How To Love Him.

“Waltzing Matilda is in there because I was born in Australia and when we grew up it was like a national anthem.”

Craig’s show will be about much more than his favourite songs, of course. He’ll also tell stories about the part they’ve played in his life – and, yes, spoiler alert, there’ll be plenty of tales about Stories, from the other side of the dancefloor.

“I want to talk about the songs that I love and the reasons they are still with me and in my life. I know I've written three autobiographies, but my autobiographies were always about how I got Strictly. This show, for me, is strictly about music and my passion and love for it.

“That's what drives my life and it's just so nice to be able to get up there and sing and entertain people really because that's what I was born to do.”

Many of the songs will be familiar to Craig’s fans – and will have a special place in their heart, just as they do in Craig’s.

“I wanted to do Memory, from Cats, because I was in that show, but I’d never get to sing that song because I’d obviously never get the part of Grizabella. It’s the same with I Don’t Know How To Love Him, from Oliver! It just goes without saying, you know, that I'll never play Nancy.

“So the record, and the tour, gives me an opportunity to sing songs that I know and love. The show will be about my love for the music and how it's affected my life. It’ll be about relationships, too, because we all go through the same emotions in relationships.

“I’ll be talking about that, and heartbreak, and where it can lead. You know, Adele has proved proved how much emotion heartbreak can evoke, not just for singers, but for the audience, too.”

Craig will be joined on stage by the super talented musician, Ben Goddard, who fans will recall from their double-act on Celebrity Gogglebox. He can’t wait to hang out with one of his best mates, and is expecting plenty of laughter along the way.

“The tour will be the opportunity to have a good time along with Ben, who I love. I've worked with him quite a lot, either directing with him or we did a one-man show together, which was hilarious.

“For me, this is about the real Craig Revel Horwood, not the judge Craig Revel Horwood. It’s about my life before I became a judge, and then my life after being a judge, because that, of course, is the only thing that I'm famous for.”

Here’s the thing. Music is our universal language. All of us have songs that we love – and for myriad reasons. In Craig’s case, listening to his selection of favourite songs, and understanding the meanings of them, helps us get to know him. So, for instance, My Way is a song he associates with his father’s death and is deeply personal.

That was my father’s favourite song and I had to sing it when he died, just before Christmas, 10 years ago. And I've been singing that sort of ever since in pantomime, but it always reminds me, you know, of my father, because that was one of his favorite tunes.

“So there's a lot of emotion behind each one of the songs that I sing, which I think is good, you know, and there's a lot of fun in there as well, because, of course, I have nothing really to do with Disney, The Lion King.”

There will be other tributes during the show, including to The Vivienne and Paul O’Grady, artists Craig knew and admired. And, of course, there’ll be plenty of Strictly.

“It’s been Fab-U-Lous to have been there since the start. None of us could ever have believed it would become the phenomenon that it did. It’s been a huge part of my life and the reason that people know me. So yes, of course, I’ll be talking about Strictly – I don’t think people would forgive me if I didn’t.”

It’s no mean fate at the age of 60 to be releasing a debut album. At a time in life when many are slowing down, or reaching a happy and stable plateau, Craig is continuing to chase his dreams. And recording a debut record was foremost among them. He had to find his voice, in a sense, and work out how he wanted to deliver songs. Having worked in musical theatre, where the objective is often to be loud and proud, he found the greatest moments were in a hush, where he lowered his voice to a more personal level. “Recording taught me so many things. It taught me how to be quiet, it taught me uh how to add more emotion into the sound of my voice as well. It’s not that I wanted to sound like Barbra Streisand, or Shirley Bassey, you know, but I had to discover who I was. You know, who is Craig Revel Horwood and what is his sound and what is his voice?

“I think a lot of artists come across that. Human League has a certain sound. You know, Rod Stewart had the raspy sound. But I thought, what is Craig Revel Horwood's sound? We had to figure that out. I think you can break more of the rules. Singing is about having an amazing vocal quality, rather than a pitch-perfect voice. I mean, Dame Judy Dench once came on stage and she sang Send in the Clowns. No, she's not a singer. She's never been able to sing. But because of her commitment to the character, to the emotion, it came across brilliantly. That was one of the best renditions of Send in the Clowns I've ever heard.”

And now it’s time to hit the road. Craig will be completing a huge tour with and can hardly wait. He’s more than happy to temporarily ditch the comfort of his judge’s chair on Strictly, or the comfort of a West End theatre, as he heads into the regions.

“The reason I love touring is that it takes me to the people and I get to see the country. It's about that as much as meeting people and learning because, you know, in in certain areas, you'll get different audiences.

“Every city and town has a wonderful theatre and we’ll be visiting those gems and thinking, you know, wow. I'm going to 53 theatres around the country in three months, you know, it's pretty full on. But it's great, it's fantastic, and there's some places I've been before that I can't wait to return to, and those places I've never been. It's going to be great. I’m looking forward to it.”

And with that, it’s time to call it a wrap. Craig Revel Horwood has become part of the national discourse with his humorous role on Strictly, but, as importantly, he’s been responsible for some of the nation’s best work in musical theatre. And now it’s time for him to step out of the shadow take centre stage. It’s time to hear him sing like never before. And it’s time to hear Craig Revel Horwood’s very own, very personal Revelations.

Alphabetti Theatre Announces Exciting Spring Season of Work Under New Artistic Leadership

Alphabetti Theatre has announced its upcoming spring season, marking the first season of work programmed by the venue under new leadership. In a statement, new Artistic & Executive Director Ed Cole said: “I am very excited to be able to announce Alphabetti’s first season of programming since my arrival in June last year.  Since I arrived in my role the staff here at Alphabetti have wasted no time in making me feel like a member of the family, and I owe a huge degree of gratitude to them for negotiating the first stages of this transitional period with incredible professionalism, care, and proactive optimism.”

The upcoming season reflects Alphabetti’s ongoing commitment to creating a welcoming space for artists, audiences, and communities to share stories, develop ideas, and create change. With a diverse programme of theatre, comedy, cabaret, music, and poetry, as well as hosting four separate festivals, the spring season promises to provide something for everyone.

Highlights of the Spring Season

The season kicks off with a mix of familiar faces and new ventures, showcasing the incredible talent of the North East and beyond. Among the highlights are:

FLUFF (March 14 – March 15): Winner of the Best Theatre Production at the Buxton Fringe 2024, alongside awards for Best Performance and Best New Piece at the Birmingham Fringe 2023. The non-linear plot line allows the audience to feel, first hand, the devastating effects of dementia, through joining Fluff in her journey to uncover her life’s memories. Full NETG Preview: LINK

• GROUNDED (May 22 – May 24): A play filled with music and movement that affirms life by confronting loss, giving a fresh take on the importance of place for experiences of grief; forging spaces of hope, solidarity, and mutual support.

• SH*T LIFE CRISIS (5 June – 7
June): Grace smashed cancer, but victory feels like a bad joke. While throwing a memorial for Abbie, her ride-or-die chemo buddy, Grace lays bare how surviving turned her life inside out. This darkly hilarious karaoke theatre show cranks up the tunes while Grace unpacks her broken pieces, with live music throughout and a full-blown karaoke party to end!

In addition to these productions Alphabetti will continue its tradition of developing new work and platforming creative voices, with a variety of one-off performances and regular events. The season will also see Alphabetti host four festivals - Newcastle Fringe Festival, Northern Pride, Tête-à-Tête Opera Festival and Classics Fest.

A Commitment to Fairness and Sustainability

This season marks a shift in Alphabetti’s approach to programming, responding directly to the fiscal challenges facing the creative sector. Previous seasons have centred around three-week runs of new productions, and Alphabetti is committed to continuing to platform new work but must respond to the current funding landscape. Ed Cole explained: “Our main aim is to avoid a situation where productions have to be delayed, scaled down or cancelled due to lack of funds.

As such, you’ll spot there are one or two gaps in the programme where we hope we will be able to programme shows but are having to wait on the outcome of funding bids. You can rest assured that we’ll be shouting from the rooftops when these shows are ready to be announced.’

A New Chapter for Alphabetti

This season is the first step in a broader period of organisational development at Alphabetti, generously funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and Arts Council England. This funding has enabled the theatre to bring in external consultation from Ned Glasier, founder of Company Three, to help shape a new company vision, while staff will embark on training in crucial services including BSL and mental health first aid.

Ed emphasised the importance of this transitional period: “Alphabetti has a responsibility to our artists, our audiences and our communities to create a welcoming space where people can share stories, develop ideas, and create change. We must also be honest about the challenges facing the creative sector in the present day, and work with partners across the city and beyond to ensure that everyone can be optimistic about the creative future of Newcastle and the North East.”

A Warm Welcome Awaits

Alphabetti’s bar has also had a makeover, with a range of delicious new bar snacks on offer to complement the theatre’s warm and welcoming atmosphere. Ed concluded: “Alphabetti, like all independent venues, relies on people making the brave decision to put on a coat, hop on a bus, a bike, or a train, and have a night out. We believe this fantastic season of work will mean the decision to spend an evening at Alphabetti is always going to be the right one, and we can’t wait to welcome you in the coming weeks and months”.

Sunderland Empire has thrilled to announce that after a phenomenal year of fundraising over £21,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, their nominated charity for 2025 will be Sunderland Empire Theatre Trust.

Since the theatre’s charity panel launched in 2023, Sunderland Empire have selected one local North East charity who will be their main focus for fundraising annually. Sunderland Empire Theatre Trust, a not-for-profit charity, enables the theatre’s award-winning Creative Learning team to deliver a programme which educates through engagement, unlocking the potential of local communities and schools, with the aim of increasing access to performing arts. The charity’s important work engages with and empowers people of all abilities, ages, genders, races and socio-economic backgrounds.

Funds donated to the Sunderland Empire Theatre Trust ensure that the Creative Learning team can continue to deliver a vibrant programme reflective of the ever-changing cultural and educational landscape responsive to the local needs of Sunderland.

Just some recent work provided by the Creative Learning team includes leading weekly workshops with diverse groups such as Bright Minds Youth Theatre (a vibrant and inclusive group for neurodiverse young people between 12 and 18), Movers (a ballet and Contemporary Dance class for adults over 55s), Community Chorus, Connect Theatre Company (an inclusive theatre group for adults with additional needs) and more. Collaboration with schools on creative projects, working with touring theatre performances and engaging Sunderland communities to stage a full production with The National Theatre have also been key elements in the charity’s programme over the past year.

Sunderland Empire’s charity panel will work together with Sunderland Empire Theatre Trust to plan special organised events throughout the year which the local community will be able to participate in as well as staff-based fundraising events. Funds will also be collected via buckets and QR codes throughout 2025 and Panto season for any generous patrons who would like to donate.

Donations will help to provide the local community with everything from paid for places for a local child to join Sunderland Empire’s performing arts academy, supporting them to thrive and grow their personal skills, to paying for a full academic year delivering workshops, projects, theatre visits and working alongside industry professionals and Wearside schools. Money raised will also contribute to an Annual Showcase which allows all participants from weekly workshops to celebrate their journey on stage performing in front of their families and friends.

A parent of a Bright Minds Youth Theatre member said: ‘Before joining Bright Minds, she really struggled. She has autism and would often feel overwhelmed in situations. She was selective mute, and we didn’t know what we could do to help her. In the last show she did, she had a speaking part, and we couldn’t believe how confidently she was speaking on stage in front of that audience – we never thought it would happen. This is the power of what you do, and we are so grateful.’

Co-chairs of the Sunderland Empire Theatre Trust Sharon Appleby and John Mowbray added: ‘We are absolutely thrilled that Sunderland Empire has chosen our charity as its Charity of the Year. This incredible partnership is a unique opportunity to bring our shared vision to life- ensuring Sunderland's communities have access to the very best in creative arts, hosted in one of the country's most iconic venues. We look forward to working closely with the talented team at Sunderland Empire to raise vital funds and make a lasting impact together.’

Panto superstars Danny Adams and Clive Webb will return to the iconic Grey Street venue for their 20th season, continuing their legacy as Newcastle’s most beloved panto duo. Joining them is celebrated local singer-songwriter Joe McElderry as The Spirit of the Ring, and the legendary Chris Hayward as the ever-glamorous Mother Goose. Michael Harrison, who will also celebrate his 20th year as producer and creator of Newcastle Theatre Royal pantomimes said: “Newcastle Theatre Royal holds a special place in my heart, as I grew up watching pantomimes here as a child. We are absolutely thrilled to extend Aladdin for an extra week, making it the longest running professional panto this year. Year after year, Newcastle’s pantomime is our fastest-selling, and this year is no exception. With the return of Danny, Clive, Joe, Chris and Mick, and a production designed especially for Newcastle, this is truly set to be a panto like no other. We can’t wait for even more audiences to experience the magic!”

Marianne Locatori, Newcastle Theatre Royal’s Chief Executive, said: "As Danny, Clive and Michael celebrate their 20th panto season here at Newcastle Theatre Royal, we’ve extended this year’s show to eight weeks ensuring that even more people have the chance to be part of the festive fun and experience the special panto magic we all love from Michael’s spectacular productions. Today, on our 188th birthday, our audiences are as loyal as ever and they come back again and again to see the dynamic comedy duo that is Danny & Clive, alongside our brilliantly talented panto company.”

Preview: The Baddies at Durham Gala

The Baddies take over Gala Durham this half term

The Baddies

Durham Gala

Tuesday 25 - Thursday 27 February 2025

There’s fun for all the family at Gala Durham this half term as The Baddies take to the stage.

The brand-new stage adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s smash-hit story will entertain audiences from Tuesday 25 to Thursday 27 February.

Telling the story of the very worst Baddies in the world, the show features a witch, a troll and an ancient ghost roar, who spook and cast spells as they try and scare a girl out of her wits. Find out who will succeed or if the girl is braver than they think.

Directed and choreographed by Katie Beard, with songs by Joe Stilgoe, who also created the catchy lyrics for the stage adaptation of Zog and The Flying Doctors, The Baddies is a laugh-out-loud riot for all the family.

Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s book has been adapted for the stage by David Greig and Jackie Crichton, and co-produced alongside Freckle Productions, who are pioneers in imaginative storytelling for children.

The team are responsible for smash-hit stage successes including Stick Man, Tabby McTat, Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales, and Zog and the Flying Doctors.

Cllr Elizabeth Scott, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: “We can’t wait to welcome The Baddies to Gala Durham next week. This fantastic show offers fun for all the family and brings a wonderful story to life on stage.

“With performances at various times across the three days, it’s a wonderful way for families to spend some quality time together and of course, inspire a whole new generation of theatre goers. We want to ensure culture is accessible for all ages here in County Durham, and what better way to start than with this Julia Donaldson classic.”

Cast Announced for The Sunderland Story

Sunderland Empire
Thursday 15 May – Saturday 31 May 2025

Left to right: Jude Nelson, Ainsley Fannen, James Hedley,

Phil Corbitt, Jayne Mackenzie and Mack McNally

Full casting has today been announced for the highly-anticipated return of The Sunderland Story, coming exclusively to Sunderland Empire for a second season from Thursday 15 May – Saturday 31 May 2025 due to popular demand.

Following standing ovations when it made its premiere in May 2023, The Sunderland Story proved extremely popular with both football and theatre fans alike, and this updated version is sure to capture the hearts of Wearside audiences again in 2025.

The production which follows the Carter family features an entirely local cast who today came together at The Stadium of Light to celebrate its return and welcome new cast members. Introducing Phil Corbitt (Mamma Mia UK and International Tour, Calendar Girls UK Tour) starring as Billy Carter and Mack McNally (The Cops, Heartbeat) as Charlie Thompson. Eagerly returning to the cast for 2025 are Jayne Mackenzie (Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Byker Grove) as Ruby Carter, Ainsley Fannen (South Pacific UK Tour, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) as Kevin Carter, Jude Nelson (Sleeping Beauty at Gala Durham, A Way Home) as Neila Carter, and James Hedley (War Child National Tour, Byker Grove) as The Busker.

Told through music, comedy and emotion, The Sunderland Story will take fans on a trip down memory lane up to the modern day, telling the epic tale of Sunderland AFC’s past from the first trophy win to the team’s legendary managers and scorers including Watson, Stokoe, Reid, Cochrane, Campbell, and Gurney. The production remembers one of the biggest moments in SAFC’s history - that glorious 1973 FA Cup win with all-new additional scenes and songs for 2025.

Not simply a celebration of the club’s history, The Sunderland Story follows avid Sunderland fans the Carter family, who, busy mourning the loss of the family patriarch, reminisce about tales of days gone by, family and friends, shipbuilding, mines, the newly emerging city of Sunderland and the bonds and memories that the beautiful game can create.

The Sunderland Story is a heartfelt tribute to all the Sunderland greats no longer with us and the supporters who remain the football club’s future and past, its footings and foundation, famed for their passion throughout the land.

Mack McNally said, "As a lifelong Sunderland supporter, to be involved in this project is like a dream come true to be honest with you. I’m a season ticket holder and I’ve got a history of being linked to the club in other ways. I worked with The Foundation of Light for a year as an Education Coordinator and I described that as my dream job, it was like the icing on a cake, well this is like the icing on a bigger cake, I’m really excited."

Returning cast member Jude Nelson said: "I’m excited to be back in front of an audience who is raucous, full of passion and it just feels like a real celebration of the club, and to be there in a theatre full of people with everyone enjoying it together in a shared experience is really, really lovely."

David Bruce, Chief Business Officer at Sunderland AFC, said: “We are thrilled to be supporting the return of The Sunderland Story and are excited for its comeback in 2025. My time at MLS meant I missed it the first time around, but through family and friends, I know just how well the show captured the essence and heart of our Club. Sunderland is all about family and community, and I can’t wait to enjoy with my loved ones and fellow supporters this May.”

The Sunderland Story is produced by Alterean Media, written by Nicky Allt and directed by Howard Gray.
